"HARRY POTTER'S" GLENFINNAN

Tour Highlights: Hairy Coos in Glen Lonan...Glen Orchy...Rannoch Moor...Glen Coe...Bonnie Prince Charlie's monument at Loch Shiel...Glenfinnan Viaduct...views of Ben Nevis.

This longer tour visits both Glen Coe and Glenfinnan.  Glen Coe is Scotland’s grandest and most mysterious valley. Its beauty belies its bloody history as the setting for the 1692 Glen Coe Massacre. We take you there via Glen Lonan with its photogenic Highland Cattle. We'll stop at Glen Orchy for tea and biscuits by the tumbling waterfalls of the river Orchy. We then cross the remote and deserted Rannoch Moor and down Glen Coe itself to the towering Three Sisters, three Scottish mountains looking over the glen. Lunch is at the famous Clachaig Inn or, if the weather is fine, a picnic at Old Inverlochy Castle at Fort William.

After lunch we climb up Glen Finnan Monument to get up close and personal with the statue of 'Bonnie Prince Charlie' and  look down the spectacular glen at the head of Loch Shiel.  What's the story? Glenfinnan is best known in Scotland as the place where Prince Charles Edward Stewart raised his standard at the start of his ill-fated attempt to regain the crown of the United Kingdom in 1745.

A short walk leads us to a good view of the impressive Glenfinnan viaduct, which at over 100 feet high, features 21 arches.  If you've seen the Harry Potter films you'll recognise the Glenfinnan viaduct - the Hogwarts Express passes over it on its way to Hogwarts School. Then we take a peek at the cute Glenfinnan station with its tiny railway museum.

On our return journey from Glenfinnan, time permitting, we take a detour down the road hugging the scenic west banks of Loch Eil to get the best view of Ben Nevis, Britain’s highest mountain.  As we head back to Oban, we'll stop at the Castle Stalker viewpoint with its panoramic view of the castle with Port Appin lighthouse and Loch Linnhe beyond.

Tour Prices

The Glenfinnan via Glen Coe Tour is £32.50 per person.
